Meta Description: Get ready for the massive launch of Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition! We dive into the Armageddon box set, core rule changes, and everything you need for the preview games.
The wait is almost over, hobbyists! If you’ve been hanging out at Nerd Haven Games lately, you know the air has been thick with the smell of plastic glue and anticipation. Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition is officially landing, and tomorrow, Monday, May 25th, the very first preview games are set to kick off worldwide.
Whether you’re a veteran of the Long War or a fresh recruit looking to pick up your first warhammer 40k models, this edition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting shifts in the game's history. We aren't just talking about a few minor tweaks; we’re looking at a fundamental refinement of how we play, move, and fight in the grim darkness of the far future.
Grab a coffee, settle into your favourite painting chair, and let’s break down exactly what’s coming in the massive Armageddon launch box and how the new rules will change your next game night.
The Armageddon Launch Box: A Legend Reborn
The centerpiece of this new era is the Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon boxed set. For those who remember the Third War for Armageddon, this is a beautiful, nostalgic, and brutal return to one of the most iconic warzones in the setting.

What’s Inside?
This box is absolutely packed with value. If you’re looking for discount warhammer 40k, buying these launch sets is historically the best way to get a massive army for a fraction of the individual kit price. Inside, you’ll find:
- Space Marines (Blood Angels Theme): A fresh wave of Primaris reinforcements. While they are themed around the sons of Sanguinius in the art, the models themselves are generic, meaning you can paint them as Ultramarines, Space Wolves, or even your own custom Chapter.
- Orks: The Green Tide is back and looking meaner than ever. The new Ork Boyz kit is a standout, featuring simplified loadouts that make gaming faster without losing that classic "Orky" feel.
- Core Rules Book: A sleek, A5-sized manual that’s been reorganised with a new reference system. No more flipping through 300 pages to find a single keyword!
- The Dominatus Deck: This is a game-changer. It’s a randomised campaign system that lets your units level up and gain "Agendas" over multiple games, effectively turning every match into a mini-narrative experience.

The Big Rule Shakeup: Evolution, Not Reboot
The best news for your wallet? 11th Edition is an evolution of 10th. This means you can still use your existing codexes and datasheets! However, the way you use them is changing significantly. Games Workshop has focused on making the game flow more logically while removing some of the "power combos" that made 10th edition a bit overwhelming at times.
1. The One-Stratagem Limit
In 10th, we saw a lot of "stratagem stacking" where a single unit would become nearly immortal or deal impossible damage by layering three or four different buffs. In 11th Edition, a single unit can only be affected by one stratagem per phase.
This puts a huge emphasis on your positioning and your army's core stats rather than just who has the most Command Points to burn in a single go. It makes the game feel much more tactical and fair for everyone involved.
2. Cover and Stealth: A New Perspective
If you’ve played warhammer for a while, you’re used to cover giving you a bonus to your armour save. Not anymore! In 11th Edition, being in cover gives the attacker a -1 penalty to their Ballistic Skill.
This is a massive change. It means that high-accuracy units are still reliable, but "average" shooters will really struggle to hit targets hunkered down in the ruins. Additionally, the Stealth rule has been simplified; it now just gives you the benefit of cover even if you're out in the open. But be warned: they don't stack! If you're already in a forest, Stealth won't help you any further.
3. Combat Phase Flow
The Fight phase has always been a bit of a headache with activation orders. 11th Edition streamlines this beautifully. Now, all "Pile-In" moves for the entire army happen at the start of the phase, and all "Consolidate" moves happen at the very end. This prevents the "ping-pong" movement we often saw and makes the middle of the phase focus purely on rolling dice and dealing damage.

Leaders and List Building
One of my favourite changes is how Characters and Leaders interact with their units. In 11th Edition, you assign your Leaders to their bodyguard units during list construction, not at the start of the game.
Even better? If the bodyguard unit is wiped out, the Leader now retains the special rules and buffs they gained from leading that unit. No more losing your cool combos just because your opponent rolled well on a squad of Intercessors! This makes your heroes feel like actual leaders who have trained with their troops, rather than just buffs that vanish the moment things get hairy.
Objectives Are Now Terrain
Say goodbye to those flat, abstract circular markers on the table. In 11th Edition, objectives are tied to actual terrain features. You’ll be fighting over a specific bunker, a ruined shrine, or a fuel depot. This not only looks much better on our beautiful store tables but also makes the "Force Disposition" system work. Your army’s composition now directly influences which missions you play, making every battle feel like a unique encounter based on the forces present.
