The TGA Revolution: No More "Value Upcharges"

If you’ve ever looked into grading with the big American companies, you might have run into a frustrating practice called "upcharging."

Essentially, some companies charge you more if your card is worth more. If you send in a card thinking it’s worth $100 and it turns out to be a pristine 10 worth $1,000, they will actually charge you a higher grading fee after the fact! It feels like a tax on your good luck.

TGA is different. One of the biggest perks of TGA is that their grading fees are a flat rate.

Whether you are grading a common card that you just happen to love, or a secret rare that’s worth hundreds of dollars, the price is the same. There are no hidden fees or extra charges for high-value cards, which is a huge perk compared to other grading services that charge more based on the card’s value. This transparency is a breath of fresh air in the hobby world. It allows you to budget exactly how much your grading submission will cost without any surprises.

Protection and Preservation: Why Even a "7" Is Worth It

A common misconception is that you should only grade cards if they are "guaranteed" to be a 10. While high grades are great for resale value, there is another massive reason to grade: Preservation.

TCG cards are made of paper, and paper is fragile. Humidity, dust, sunlight, and accidental spills can ruin a collection in seconds. By getting your favourite cards encapsulated in a TGA slab, you are locking them in a protective, archival-quality case that will keep them safe for decades.

Even if you think your favourite childhood card might only get a 5 or a 6 because of some corner wear, getting it slabbed is a fantastic way to honour it. The TGA slabs are sturdy, crystal clear, and look incredible on a display shelf. It turns a loose card into a piece of art.

If you have a collection of board games or miniatures, you know the value of keeping things in good condition: card grading is just the ultimate version of that for TCG fans.

EvoRetro Gear for Your Fresh Slabs

Once your cards come back graded, you’ll probably want a great way to protect them and show them off. Nerd Haven carries a variety of EvoRetro products in-store, including protectors, storage cases, and display stands made specifically for graded cards.

It’s an awesome way to keep those newly graded cards safe while also making them look sharp on a shelf, desk, or in your collection room. If you’ve just picked up a fresh slab, EvoRetro gear is the perfect finishing touch.

TGA also supports a wide range of games, which is great news if your collection goes beyond Pokémon or Magic. Whether you collect classic favourites or newer titles, grading can add protection, presentation, and prestige across the hobby. And if you’re chasing the very top end, a Flawless 10 is the kind of grade that instantly stands out in any collection.

How to Submit Your Cards at Nerd Haven

Ready to get your cards slabbed? The process is super simple!

  1. Selection: Pick out the cards you want to grade. We recommend bringing them in "penny sleeves" and "top loaders" to keep them safe during transport.
  2. Visit Us: Come down to the shop! Our team will sit down with you, look over the cards, and help you fill out the submission form.
  3. Choose Your Level: Decide if you want the Value, Standard, or Express service.
  4. Relax: We’ll take it from there. We’ll log your cards into our system, pack them securely, and drive them to TGA.
  5. The Reveal: Once they’re back, we’ll give you a shout. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of "popping" a fresh batch of slabs and seeing those grades for the first time!
